The Location:

The gorgeous St. Anna Bay divides Willemstad into two major districts—Punda on the east and Otrobanda on the west. Punda was formed when the Dutch captured the island from Spain in 1634. The new leaders built a fort, Fort Amsterdam, to protect their settlement, and soon the city began to grow. Today, the Fort serves as the seat of the Government of the Netherlands Antilles.

In 1707, building permits were granted for Otrobanda - "The Other Side.” Off Breedestraat, a grand residential neighborhood was built by those eager for stately mansions reflecting their higher social standing. In contrast to the neat grid of Punda, Otrobanda is a maze of twisting streets and alleyways, giving the neighborhood its own intimate charm.

Outside Punda and Otrobanda, you'll find Scharloo and Pietermaai, home to a wealth of gorgeous restored mansions. These two suburbs are listed along with Willemstad on the UNESCO World Heritage List, commemorating their unique value to the world's cultural and natural heritage.

Curacao has been a major trade center for hundreds of years so it's not surprising that stores are stocked with quality items from around the world. Strolling around in exquisite, centuries-old buildings while ocean liners cruise up the channel that cuts through the city, so close you could almost touch them, all this makes the shopping ambience very special.

While the buildings will fascinate you, Curacao has much to offer in its natural beauty. Although Curacao seems arid and you would not expect much life on the island, wildlife is abundant. When you go into the more rural areas you will be amazed by all the birds, mammals and reptiles you see in Curacao.

Curacao is a special treat for divers and snorkelers who never seem to be able to stop talking about the beauty of Curacao's underwater world. It may well be one of the best places in the word for shore dives or to enjoy the beauty of sea's nature while snorkeling. There are several special dive sites with sunken boats and an airplane that afford unique diving experiences. In fact, there are 40 different dive areas on Curacao which covers 65 individual sites.

Curacao has something for everyone – it's an experience you'll never forget!
