Tanya on the beautiful streets of Paris
THE MAYAN RIVIERA IS IT
By Tanya Thelen

The past few years the Mayan Riviera, also known as Playacar or Playa Del Carmen, has been growing in popularity. Recently, I visited there for four nights and saw for myself what all the fuss is about.

This Mexican destination has beautiful beaches, gorgeous resorts, blue-turquoise water, and great Mexican shopping. Everything you need to make a great vacation!

My husband and I took my 2 ½ year old daughter to experience the family aspect of it since I already knew this was the place for singles, couples, and honeymooners. We stayed at the popular Iberostar Paraiso Del Mar located about 20 minutes south of the Cancun airport and 15 minutes north of the town of Playa Del Carmen. Iberostars are known for its beautiful resorts and great service. This resort met all my expectations and more. The open-air lobby leads up to a beautiful array of foliage and ponds with flamingos and tropical fish. The marble floors and pillars leading us to the different choices of dining and entertainment was luxurious as well! We really liked eating whenever we wanted, especially when children need to eat often. All-inclusive resorts are a "no-worry" benefit to vacationing. Everything is prepaid - including tips!

The Iberostar Paraiso Del Mar is a very large resort that entails a lot of walking which we enjoyed for the exercise and beautiful landscaping. There is a tram that runs alongside of the hotel for those people who don't want to walk. And, oh, the pool! Wow! One of the most spectacular I've seen. No one will be without a chair - that was great! The beach was fantastic too! The staff kept everything so clean and tailored. Even the rooms were tastefully decorated with a tropical-Mexican flare. The resort felt very comfortable and inviting - as did I hear others agree.

The location of the Iberostar Paraiso Del Mar is north of the Playa Del Carmen hotel-zone and sits alone. This, to me, was more of an advantage. First of all, this hotel was one of the first stops from the airport and the last on the return to the airport. We avoided all the other hotel stops the bus transfer had to make. Second, everything we needed was right there. The resort and pool area were huge with many activities to offer, even a kids-club for children over 4 years old. If we wanted to do anything extra there were a number of tour desks located right in the lobby area. The hotel even offers a free shuttle into Playa Del Carmen that ran throughout the day.

We highly recommend the Mayan Riviera and the Iberostar Paraiso Del Mar Resort. Rates are approximately $1100 per adult for four nights including air and this lovely all-inclusive resort. Off-season rates may be less expensive. Call me to book your trip to this fantastic destination!
