Northwest/KLM Baggage Policy Changes (03/1/2007)

Effective for tickets issued on/after March 1, 2007, Northwest/KLM implemented the following changes to its baggage policy:

Maximum Weight for Checked Baggage
Maximum weight for checked baggage applies to all baggage except:
-Assist devices such as wheelchairs
-Musical instruments
-Pet in Hold (AVIH)

-100 lb

-70 lb for all travel except transpacific.
-Transpacific travel will remain at 100 lb.
- Exempt from this restriction are:

  • Assist devices such as wheelchairs
  • Pets in hold (AVIH)
  • Musical Instruments

Heavy Bag Fee (50-70 lb) for Transatlantic and Transpacific travel.
Exceptions:
-between the US and PH/HK/CN and between JP and Brazil no heavy bag fee applies because 70lb is part of the free baggage allowance.

-USD 25.00/CAD 39.00
The heavy bag fee for domestic travel will remain at USD 25.00/CAD 30.00.

-USD/CAD 50.00

Excess Bag Charge for Transatlantic and Transpacific travel.

Excess baggage fees vary by origin and destination cities.

Transatlantic – USD/CAD/EUR 150.00
Transpacific – USD/CAD 130.00

Exceptions:
-between US/PH USD 160.00*
-between HI/JP USD 84.00/JPY 16200

*PH has even higher rates in DEC/JAN/MAR/APR/MAY/JUN – contact NW/KLM Reservations for assistance with fees if a customer is traveling during these months.

Note: Convert USD to local currency if originating in Area 3 ( Asia ).
Convert EUR to local currency if originating in Area 2 (Europe – for countries in Europe where EUR is not the local currency, Middle East, Africa, India ).

Bike for Transatlantic and Transpacific travel.

One bike either:
-no charge if within free allowance or
-1 excess baggage charge if not within the free allowance.

No longer allowed within the free allowance. One excess baggage charge will be collected for each bike checked.

Golf Equipment for Transatlantic and Transpacific travel.

One golf bag either:
-No charge if within free allowance or
-50% of 1 excess charge if not within the free allowance.

Additional golf bags at normal excess baggage charges based on actual weight and size.

One golf bag either:
-No charge if within the free allowance or
-Flat rate of EUR/USD/CAD 75.00.

Additional golf bags at normal excess baggage charges based on actual weight and size.

Ski (snow/water) for Transatlantic and Transpacific travel.

One set of ski equipment either:
-No charge if within the free allowance subject to a USD/EUR/CAD 50.00 heavy bag fee if over 50 lb or
-25% of 1 excess charge if not within the free allowance.

Additional sets at normal excess baggage charges based on actual weight and size.

One set of ski equipment either:
- No charge if within the free allowance subject to a USD/EUR/CAD 50.00 heavy bag fee if over 50 lb or
-Flat rate of EUR/USD/CAD 50.00 if not within the free allowance.

Additional sets at normal excess baggage charges based on actual weight and size.

Surf/Windsurf for Transatlantic and Transpacific travel.

Boards up to 109 inches in length:
Transatlantic – free if within free allowance, otherwise 1 excess baggage charge.
Transpacific – 50% of 1 excess charge.
Boards exceeding 109 inches:
Transatlantic – not accepted
Transpacific – 1 excess baggage charge.

Maximum length of any surf/windsurf equipment will be 109 inches.
Transatlantic and transpacific – 1 excess baggage charge for each surf/windsurf checked.

Pet in Hold Charges Transatlantic and Transpacific travel (AVIH).

-Up to 70 lb – 1 to 3 excess charges depending on the kennel dimensions.
-71 lb to 121 lb – 2 to 3 charges dependingon the kennel dimensions.
-122 lb to 165 lb – 3 excess charges.

-Up to 70 lb – 1 excess charge
-71 lb to 100 lb – 3 excess charges
-101 lb to 121 lb – 4 excess charges
-122 lb to 143 lb – 5 excess charges
-144 lb to 165 lb – 6 excess charges
